Mercy Records Is Your Friend
& Mine - June 29, 2006
Dear Friends,
Some of you may know I recently signed a deal
with Mercy Records, Sony's hottest new indie label.
I have spent years in the music business searching
for the kind of team I've found at Mercy. The
label is built around helping each artist fulfill
his or her creative vision. How many times does
THAT happen in the real world? So, if you haven't
already, please make a friends request for Mercy
Records (just click on the link below). If you
are a musician, these folks are the very best
kind of people to know in the business. If you're
a music fan, please check out all the other excellent
artists on the label. Most of them are good friends
of mine and incredible people as well as exceptional
artists. Your support really does make all the
difference. Thanks for spreading the love! Cheers,
Wil
Human Rights Campaign - June
27, 2006
I was lucky enough recently to contribute musically
to a public service campaign. After the atrocities
of World War II, the nations of the world got
together to ratify an international declaration
of human rights, 30 in all, which were then promptly
forgotten. Youth for Human Rights Internationalis
raising awareness of these basic freedoms and
building grassroots support to pressure governments
to finally adopt moral, ethical and legal codes
they've already agreed to but have failed to enforce.
In an age where it's hard to find the "good
guys" in any government, including our own,
I think organizations that focus on global problems
in an inclusive way are more important than ever.
I've posted one of the ads on my MySpace page
(www.myspace.com/wilseabrook).
All 30 ads are moving and thought provoking. I
encourage everyone to find out more by visiting
www.youthforhumanrights.org. Every problem has
a solution. The first step is making people aware
of the problem... - Cheers, Wil
(When the PSA I contributed music for is available,
it will be posted to the site; for now, check
out "Freedom of Thought.")
New Song/Lyrics - June 3,
2006
I suppose it's true that nothing in life that's
worth having is easy. A romantic relationship
that lasts and grows takes work, and I'm finding
when I try to write love songs that I don't really
want to write about the infatuation stage so much.
I'd rather write about what it's like a few months
or years down the line. Because that's really
the stuff of life, isn't it? How is it that we
so fixate on that first stage and leave nothing
in our cultural dialogue for the other 99 percent?
This song is my attempt at discussing what it's
like to really commit to someone when it means
that you can no longer be selfish all the time,
that you can no longer be with thirty other women
even though every beer commercial in the universe
tells you you aren't a man unless you have at
least two (how many guys do YOU know who can handle
even one woman very well??). I've talked a bit
recently about MySpace and what I think we're
all doing here. I think it's funny that the ads
that pop up on every other page (maybe there's
one in the margin right now!) are for "sexy
singles" dating services or virtual brothels
or whatever else. To me it seems that looking
for love means looking no further than a touched
up photo and a two minute profile. That might
be chemistry, hell that might be the beginning
of a romance for the ages, but that ain't love.
I guess I wrote this because I feel a little cheated.
Like all the stuff swirling around out there in
pop culture land makes it harder for people to
really have stable, healthy relationships. Why
commit to just one person when there are clearly
billions of incredibly attractive singles looking
to date YOU right NOW as soon as you fill out
this questionnaire and give US your credit card
number?! I mean, I joke about the beer commercials
but if I hadn't seen 8 zillion of them (along
with another 8 zillion Victoria's Secret ads)
would it be a little bit easier to take a three
dimensional look at every woman I come into contact
with? I think it might be. So you can't outlaw
beer commercials (Prohibition didn't go so well)
but you can at least speak some truth, right?
Here goes nothing...
All I Can Say
For too long I have seen paths not taken
and those paths stayed with me
I felt stronger between the choice I'm making
and all I've left unseen
You feel like you're tied down by voices that
keep your feet on the ground
All I can say to you
Is I don't wanna stay here
don't wanna learn to live with my fear
All this I leave to you
I'm trying hard to be clear
I'm trying hard to give you myself, my dear
I guess most of my life I thought I was
The kind of guy
Who would just get it right, so sensible in love
but as time has gone by
I feel like I'm tied down by voices that
keep my feet on the ground
All I can say to you...
I thought it such a shame
With no one else to blame
But now I stake my claim
To what will happen, now I've let you in
All I can say to you...
The Truth Is, Life Is Good
- May 5, 2006
I received an email this week from a friend who
travels quite a bit as a part of his business
(check out www.ancientresource.com
to see what cool stuff he does for a living).
He is currently in the Middle East, sending missives
from the road. What he wrote rang so true to me
that I wanted to share it with others. Every time
I strip virtually naked at an airport security
checkpoint I think about what a few thousand crazy
people have done to the vast majority who are
well intentioned, ethical, and generally trying
to do the right thing. I have been lucky enough
to travel the world many times over and I can
tell you that this planet holds infinitely more
beauty and life than it does danger, fear, and
destruction. Without further ado, my friend Gabriel:
"Hi again --
It's the middle of the night over here but something's
been bothering me. I heard a few days ago that
Osama Bin Laden had another `call to arms' for
the Muslim nations to arm up against the USA.
I was, of course, in a predominantly Islamic country
at the time so I rode it out and advised the both
of us to lay low until we left the country. But
now we're out and this has still been burning
at me.
There is nothing to be scared of.
From everywhere I've been and everything I've
seen, I have never been so sure of anything in
my life. It is far scarier and far more dangerous
to take a stroll through East Los Angeles or even
East Palo Alto than to walk the streets of Cairo,
Amman, Istanbul, or nearly anywhere else (Baghdad
is an exception). (Keep in mind: I am just about
7 hours from Baghdad at this moment. I firmly
hold my point).
We as people are trained to fear what we do not
know or understand. Terrorism, for example. Terrorists
efficiently execute their goals because, by nature,
they inflict terror. When terror gets the best
of people and that terror turns to panic, these
very uneducated, very undeserving, very few, gain
the complete attention of everyone, nearly everywhere.
This should not be so. There are far too many
of us to be affected in this way. Life is far
too short. And life is fleeting enough as it is
without the influence of far undeserving fear-inflictors.
And terror has existed in our country, in our
towns, for quite some time. The `War on Terror'
never really addressed any of the true terror
groups threatening true Americans even on our
home soil (Take the Klu Klux Klan. If this is
not a terror group, I don't know what is).
But we are Americans. And we, by nature of being
Americans, are a resilient people. We've been
threatened by terrifying entities since the beginning.
Think early: The Queen. Bears. The Sioux, the
mighty Mississippi, earthquakes, and the Jesse
James gang. The Mexican Revolution and The Alamo.
Syphillus and The Plague. The War for Independence
and countless attempts on our leaders' lives (failed
assassinations include Andrew Jackson, Theodore
Roosevelt, William McKinley, Franklin D. Roosevelt,
Harry Truman and Ronny Reagan). I don't know about
you, but I feel threatened by sharks, but that
doesn't keep me from the seashore. We've been
threatened, and attacked by the Japanese and even
after Pearl Harbor our shores were bombarded by
bomb-carrying paper balloons. We've been threatened
by everyone every lunatic, every organized group,
every nation that has ever felt threatened by
us. And somehow we've prevailed. Because we are
not scared. We are not scared. I want to hear
you, out loud: WE ARE NOT SCARED. And don't let
them think even for a second that we are terrified.
Travel to Egypt. And PLEASEtravel to Jordan. These
places will amaze and strengthen you. You are
safe there. Even if violence erupts, your chances
of seeing that violence are far rarer than if
you had stayed `safe' here in L.A.
I guess that's all for now. Just, please, travel.
And travel often.
Gabriel"
New Beginnings - April 4,
2006
Spring is in the air. I know this because I'm
not in LA (where it's a sort of a perpetual state
of fake spring) for the first time in quite awhile.
I'm in the midwest until November, when I start
recording my new album. All the songs in my player
currently are contenders for the new CD. Your
feedback is much appreciate if you have some favorites.
I always like hearing from people, regardless...
I am more excited about this new album than I've
ever been about anything in my career, and that's
saying something. I'm an enthusiastic kind of
guy... I'll have more details next month about
who's producing, what the label is, etc. It's
all good news, I promise! In the meantime, keep
listening, keep telling me what you like (and,
if you must, what you don't!) and tell some friends
about me, will you? I can't tell you how good
that makes me feel. Cheers and love, Wil
